Why Eating Out Is Bad For Your Health

Jun 15th, 2006 | By Hiram | Category: Fitness, Nutrition & Diet

What’s up with the portion size being served in most restaurants nowadays? They’re HUGE! You order the “special” and they come out with enough food for a family of 4! No wonder we’re all overweight. The more you eat out, the worse the problem is.

And who doesn’t eat out these days? With both partners in most families having to work just to make ends meet, who has time to cook? Take a good look around the next time you’re in a restaurant. What do you see? You’ll probably see a lot of families there. You know, when I was growing up, eating out was a treat, something you did on a special occasion. Not any more. For more and more families, the local restaurant has become their dining room.

It’s kind of ironic, isn’t it? When we look for a place to live, one of the things we place a great emphasis on is the condition of the kitchen. We want all the latest appliances. For what? Since we’re always eating out, there’s never anything to cook in the fridge and we can’t remember how to set the stove!

Well, regardless of how we got here, here’s a great tip on how to reduce the impact of the huge portions on your waistline. Simply ask the restaurant put half of your meal in a to-go box before they serve you the meal. That way, you get a regular sized meal that you can enjoy with your family and still have a full meal in the to-go box that you can have for lunch tomorrow.

Why not just stuff yourself as much as possible first and then get a to-go box? Well, I think the answer to that is obvious. We all have a tendency to overeat if the food is placed in front of us. I think it’s a result of the “you’re not excused from the table until you clean your plate” way that many of us were raised. Following my suggestion takes that temptation away.

Eating out has become a normal part of many of our lives. Don’t let the convenience of eating out add pounds to your waist.
