Soft Drinks Linked to Heart Disease?
As a 2-3 soft drinks per day consumer, I was shocked to hear about the recent study that supposedly links the drinking of sodas to weight increases and heart disease. The study also found that it didn’t matter whether you drank diet drinks, or regular. The risks appear to be the same.
What they don’t seem to know is why these drinks apparently cause this. It could be the caramel used to flavor cola’s. However, that arguement doesn’t fly with the non-cola drinks. Maybe it’s the Carbon Dioxide that’s used to provide the “fiz.”
I used to work in a chemical laboratory so I’ve known for some time that soft drinks are extremely acidic since some of the Carbon Dioxide turns to Carbolic Acid. As a result, the pH level of a soft drink is around 3 (a pH of 7 is considered neutral).
My personal belief is that drinking too much soda nudges your body into an overall acidic state, a condition that promotes disease in addition to prematurely aging your body’s organs and reducing their efficiency. I think this study tends to support that belief.
So, whether you agree with me or not, the main question here is what are you going to do with this information?
I was drinking (and greatly enjoying) a can of Barq’s Root Beer yesterday evening as I sat on the couch and watched a little TV (I gave up soda with caffeine long ago). On the CBS Evening News, one of the soft drinks that they showed as they reported the results of this study was, you guessed it, Barq’s Root Beer. The announcer might as well have pointed to me and said, “This is just for you.”
So here’s my resolution: Since I really do want to be around to see my grandson get married and have kids, I have had my last soda.
