Tracie,

The PureSleep device is designed to reduce snoring caused by obstructions to the airway. It's not designed to work for sleep apnea of any kind, including central sleep apnea (see the PureSleep FAQ's on their website).

As I'm sure you know, sleep apnea is caused when the brain temporarily stops sending signals to the muscles that control breathing. The PureSleep device will do nothing to address that situation.

The CPAP machine you're using not only keeps the airways open due to its positive pressure, it actually provides oxygen to your lungs during those moments you temporarily stop breathing, something devices like the PureSleep don't do.

There might be alternative ways to treat what you have but it sounds like you have a condition that requires a doctor's care - and that is beyond what the PureSleep device is designed for.

Hope this answers your question.

so, this will not work with central sleep apnea? Why?This is what I have and I hate the c-pap machine. I am a flight attendant and taking the machine thru security is a pain...they always have to look at it and swap it for gun powder. I want to use this type of devise. My son uses it and loves it.

The Pure sleep device works. The only time I snore is when I forget to put in in. I wish I had gotten my wife one, But she probably wouldn't use it any way. Worth the money for sure.

Diane,
Yes, the lower section is changeable. You can set it so that it is directly below the upper section, or move it forward so that it pulls your lower jaw forward.

Note that when I say "directly below" or "move forward" I'm talking relative to your upper teeth.

There are a series of holes on one section and a "post" on the other. You move the sections to where you want them and then press the "post" into the matching hole.

Hope this explains it a little better.

You mention getting the lower section as far forward as possible, as it not changeable; yet later in comments you suggest changing that setting if lower jaw hurts. Are we able to change the setting or not?

Here a Washington Post article talking about how difficult it is to remove BPA from our food supply since plastics are used in pretty much every step of the food production and distribution chains.

Jim,

The PureSleep website describes an exercise you can do to help relieve the jaw pain - basically massaging the jaw while slowly working the muscles.

Wearing the device is like doing push-ups. At first, your muscles are sore but if you keep wearing it, they should hurt less and less. If they continue to hurt, then that means that your muscles are not "getting used" to the device and something else might be wrong. The device may in fact be set too far forward and resetting it might help.

The key is to setting the device is to find a balance between pulling the jaw forward enough so you don't snore (or don't snore as loud) but not so far forward that your jaw feels like it's being pulled out of socket. This means that you might have to settle for "not snoring as loud" instead of "not snoring at all" but if it increases the comfort, it increases the likelihood that you'll continue using the device.

Besides, you can always "take up a notch" at a later date.

Hope this helps.

I have been using the device fro about a week and a half and it really does work. The only problem is that my jaw is killing me. I can't even close my mouth properly at this point and chewing food is quite painful.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get it to work without having to take advil all the time?

Does the pain subside? have I done something wrong? should i try to refit it??

Thanks for any advice!!

Mustapha,

No, drinking Red Bull by itself is not dangerous. My article was about the trend for many people to "supercharge" their Red Bull drink with hard liquor. The combination of caffeine and alcohol is what's dangerous.

Hope that clears things up.

Seems that the BPA controversy is heating back up again with Coke and Pepsi getting caught up in it as well, as this article from The Environmental Group explains: <a href="http://www.ewg.org/kid-safe-chemicals-act-blog/2010/02/coke-pepsi-court-green-cred-but-fudge-on-bpa/" rel="nofollow">www.ewg.org/coke-pepsi</a>

Although the marketing companies can seemingly spin the evidence one way or the other, the best alternative continues to be taking steps to reducing your exposure.

Vicky,
Your concerns are valid. However, unlike braces, the PureSleep device is not designed to be worn all the time. According to the manufacturer, as well as a pretty major study I've seen, any effects of wearing the device during the night should go away the next day when you're not wearing the device and your jaw has full range of motion.

Now, keep in mind that I'm not a dentist or orthodontist and that everyone's situation is different. The study was published in the 2006 issue of Sleep and you can find it here: <a> www.aasmnet.org</a>

The study found that <i>"minor adverse effects were frequent whereas major adverse effects were uncommon."</i> If you read the comments from other users, you already know that most people have minor issues getting used to the device. The report went on to say that <i>"minor tooth movement and small changes in the occlusion developed in some patients after prolonged use but the long-term dental significance of this is uncertain."</i>

The plan fact is that these devices are not designed to be a permanent fix for snoring. How long you can use one without suffering permanent effects is not really known.

As I've mentioned before, I've got periodontal disease so I have to see my dentist every 3 months anyway. This acts as a "built in" check for me. If you're concerned that wearing the PureSleep device might affect your prior dental work, you might consider seeing your dentist more often as well.

Your concerns are valid. However, unlike braces, the PureSleep device is not designed to be worn all the time. According to the manufacturer, as well as a pretty major study I’ve seen, any effects of wearing the device during the night should go away the next day when you’re not wearing the device and your jaw has full range of motion.

Now, keep in mind that I’m not a dentist or orthodontist and that everyone’s situation is different. The study was published in the 2006 issue of Sleep and you can find it here: http://www.aasmnet.org

This device does work for my snoring but I've VERY concerned about how it may affect my jaw in the long term. I've had braces so am very familiar with how pressure can rearrange things. I'm scared to death of creating an overbite and eventually looking deformed. Has anyone consulted with an orthodontist about the possibility? I know PureSleep hasn't been around that long, but perhaps other products that create the same effect?

I don't think you get "addicted," your body just learns to adjust to sleeping with it. And you're right - it does take some getting used to at first!

It shouldn't Bob. The device has a soft plastic liner that you mold by putting it in boiling water and then biting down into it. You end up with an impression of your teeth including any gaps. I wouldn't think missing teeth would be an issue.

I have been using pure sleep for 3 months. At first it was a little hard to get used to but now I do not go to bed without it. I have talked to another friend of mine who told me about Pure Sleep it is all most like you get addicted to it.

I think stress is the primary cause of many health issues. You can have a healthy body if you can keep your mind healthy. That solves a lot of problems.

Downloaded your book and took a quick look this past weekend. This is one of the most balanced pieces of fitness-related books I've seen in a long time. You really covered a lot of areas - all of which are critical to good health.

I thought the best part was the "now that you've got the info, what are you going to do with it" section. It's true that information is only as good as the use we make of it.

Thanks for the tip Noni. I live in the Houston area and the only Costco here is located on the west end of town, about 60 miles from where I live.

However, I've since made it a practice that any time I buy ANYTHING over the Internet, I do a Google search for that item with +"discount code" to see if there are any discount codes available (make sure to include the plus sign and the phrase discount code in quotes). More often than not, you can find discount codes that will save you anywhere from 10% to 20%.

Saving money is always a good thing!

The new Costco ad has a coupon for the ultra machine, giving what looks like quite a hefty discount.

I had someone ask, "Isn't the act of 'not-thinking" actually thinking?" In other words, when you're just sitting "watching your thoughts," isn't that itself a form of thought? It's kind of a circular argument but it brings up a good point. Your mind is always active, there are always neurons firing off in your brain.

However, the point of meditation is not to eliminate all thought, or in this case, all brain activity (if that's how you define "thought") but to reduce the chatter.

Author Dinty W. Moore in his book "The Accidental Buddhist" probably said it the best I've ever heard it put. He said something to the effect that after you learn how to meditate, your "monkey mind" begins to settle down to the point that the "monkey" is lying under a palm tree sipping a mimosa instead of running around chattering and stirring up clouds of other thoughts.

The more you practice, the quieter your mind gets. It's just something you've got to experience for yourself in order to understand.
